In 1990 Craig Stewart and Rick Bohonis opened the first Urban Barn in Vancouver, and shortly after were joined by Sébastien Fauteux. At first the company founders delivered the furniture themselves.

By 2001 Urban Barn had opened nine stores between British Columbia and Manitoba.

The Stern Group became the majority owner in 2007.

Urban Barn launched their Blanket the Country campaign in 2012, where the company delivers fleece blankets to more and more local shelters every year.

The Urban Barn’s web store went online in 2015. That same year the company opened two stores in Quebec.

In 2016 Urban Barn announced their Give and Take program to donate furniture to Habitat for Humanity.
