Food Basics was created by A & P Canada, a supermarket company that operated from 1927 to 2009. The company was created as a discount, low-price alternative that was designed to offer affordable ways to acquire quality products. The company managed to cut costs by providing free cardboard boxes and not plastic bags, minimum store decorations, and higher purchase volumes. In 2005, A & P Canada was acquired by Metro Inc and Food Basics became part of the food retail giant.
