Originally named Magasins Lasalle Stores Ltée, the company was founded in 1947 in Verdun, Quebec, by Rolland Jeanne along with a group of independent grocery retailers.

After a series of mergers and acquisitions during the ‘90s, Metro would begin expanding and acquiring several of its competitors, creating the Super C stores, Food Basics, Marché Richelieu, Les 5 Saisons, Marché AMI, the Servi Express, and Dépanneurs Gem Convenience Stores. Metro also diversified by acquiring and creating a number of pharmacy divisions, such as Brunet, Jean Coutu, and Metro Pharmacy.

Nowadays Metro has the second largest market share in the food retail and distribution business in the Quebec and Ontario provinces and is a major leader in the industry all across Canada with over 900 grocery stores and 600 drugstores.
