LCBO was created in 1927 with the end of the alcohol prohibition that started in 1919. The Canadian government authorized LCBO to "control the sale, transportation and delivery" of alcoholic beverages in Ontario, virtually creating a monopoly that controlled alcohol distribution in the region.

The first LCBO commissioner was a man named David Blyth Hanna, a railway executive born in Scotland. The company was the government response to bootleggers and it took off faster than anyone expected.

In 1990, the company was rebranded, removing their iconic Coat of Arms and replacing it with a more stylish logo to adapt to a new market. By 2016, LCBO had over 650 stores and an online marketplace both in french and English.
